People generally define mental illness as “any of various conditions characterized by impairment of an individual’s normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, and caused by social, psychological, biochemical, genetic, or other factors, such as infection or head trauma. Also called emotional illness, mental disease; also called mental disorder.”

When a person’s ability to think, feel and act are significantly impaired to the degree which daily functioning is difficult, we consider that person to have a mental illness.
